About Fiona

A voice in a million

About Fiona Harrison, Vintage & Retro Vocalist

Fiona Harrison is a classically trained soprano, costume artist and variety entertainer, known as "A Voice in a Million". She performs vintage and retro shows from the 1880s to the 1970s, in authentic uniforms and period costume.

From opera to rock and roll

About Fiona Harrison: from opera to rock and roll

Fiona can switch from Opera to Rock and Roll in a way that very few singers manage convincingly. Her style takes in Light Opera, Musical Theatre, Big Band and Swing, and close harmony, and she has a three-octave vocal range.

A critic dubbed her "A Voice in a Million" after her performance in the touring stage musical From Cobbles to Rock, and the name has stayed with her. Today she headlines heritage events, hotels and cabaret rooms across the UK and Northern Europe.

Close harmony

Close harmony that sounds like a trio

Fiona's trademarks are her medley arrangements and her close harmony work. She records two harmony parts onto her backing track and sings the melody line live, which makes her act unique and unlike any other.

Her backing tracks are custom made to her own orchestral arrangements, which means she can work anywhere in the world with the minimum of fuss.

Costume

Costume and vintage glamour

Fiona studied fashion before she became a professional singer. She worked at the theatrical costumiers Bermans and Nathans in London and later as a hat designer in Luton, and many of those skills stay with her on stage.

Her wardrobe includes original civilian suits and uniforms from the 1940s alongside gowns, hats, gloves and costume jewellery. She is inspired by the Hollywood stars Rita Hayworth, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and Hedy Lamarr. What she cannot find, she has made, or she designs and makes herself.

Credits

Stage, screen and radio

Fiona's theatre credits include working with the George Thorby Glenn Miller Orchestra, Opera South East at Bexhill's De La Warr Pavilion, and national theatre tours of the 1940s musicals We'll Meet Again and How Hovis Won the War. Her roles have included Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion, Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing and the title roles in Gigi and Cinderella.

On television she has appeared on The One Show, BBC Look East, BBC South East, Anglia ITV News, Meridian Tonight and Sky News. Her radio credits include the Vernon Kay Show on Radio 2 and several BBC Three Counties Radio programmes.

Normandy and prestigious occasions

Fiona has performed at the D-Day commemorations in Normandy, at the British, Canadian and American beaches. She has sung for veterans and dignitaries at the American Gold Beach Museum in Ver-sur-Mer and the 6th June Museum in Arromanches, and was engaged by the town of Arromanches as its Artist in Residence.

She opened the 75th D-Day commemorations on Arromanches beach and performed at Pegasus Bridge. In 2014 the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended her performance in Arromanches, and in 2019 she performed at a commemorative dinner at St James's Palace attended by the Princess Royal.
